I went into Selira AI expecting the usual free-tier theatre, where you get about forty messages and then a countdown appears. That is not what happened, and it took me a while to stop waiting for it.
What Selira AI is
An AI girlfriend app where the talking is free and the pictures are what you pay for. You can make your own character or pick from a big community library that runs from anime to fully realistic, and then chat with no message cap, no ads and no counter in the corner. It sits in the same bracket as the apps in my main ranking, but priced like nothing else in it.
The free plan
This is the reason to read the review, so let me be exact about it.
You get unlimited messages, unlimited companions and unlimited memories, with no advertising. You do not get image generation, and you do not get the longer-term memory the paid tiers add. That is the whole boundary. It is one line in one place instead of a dozen small restrictions designed to make the free plan quietly unpleasant.
I used it for two weeks without paying and nothing degraded, nothing nagged, and no feature quietly stopped working. That is rare enough in this category to be the headline.
How the chat feels
Consistent, which sounds like faint praise and is not. Most girlfriend apps are excellent for an evening and mushy by the end of the week, as the character drifts into agreeing with everything you say. Selira holds its personality much further into a long session than the price would lead you to expect.
It is not the best writer I have tested. The top of my ranking produces lines with more character and more willingness to take a scene somewhere you did not plan. Selira is steady rather than surprising. Steady and free is a combination I have not been able to find anywhere else.
Visuals
Decent, fast, and clearly the thing you are buying. Both anime and realistic styles work well and generation does not keep you waiting.
The important detail is the shape of the limit. Images are metered per hour, not per month: five an hour on the $5.99 plan, ten on $9.99, twenty on $19.99. If you like an image dropping into a conversation now and then, that is plenty. If you want to sit down and produce a run of thirty, it will frustrate you, and you would be better served by an app built around image volume.
There are also one-off credit packs in 50, 100 and 250 sizes, which is a fair option if you want pictures occasionally without a subscription.
Memory
The free plan’s memory is basic and behaves like it. Inside a conversation it is fine, across days less so. The $5.99 plan adds proper long-term memory and the $9.99 plan improves retention further.
If remembering matters to you, treat $5.99 as the real entry point rather than the upsell. It still undercuts most of the competition’s cheapest tier.
Pricing
Free for unlimited chat. Light at $5.99 a month for long-term memory and five images an hour. Basic at $9.99 for ten an hour with enhanced memory. Premium at $19.99 for twenty an hour, priority responses and special companions. One-off image packs at 50, 100 or 250 credits if you would rather not subscribe.
For context, $19.99 is roughly where most apps in this space start, not where they finish.
Privacy
About average, meaning fine but nothing to relax about. Use a separate email that is not tied to your name, keep real personal details out of the chat, and read the current privacy policy before you subscribe. I say this in every review and almost nobody does it.
Selira does get one genuine advantage: you can evaluate the whole conversational side without ever handing over card details, which beats a trial that wants payment info up front.
Who Selira AI is for
If you want someone to talk to and you resent paying $20 a month for the privilege, this is the easiest recommendation I have made in a while. The free tier is the product and the paid tiers are genuinely optional.
If you are here mainly for images, it is still decent value, but understand what you are buying: a chat app with metered image generation attached, not an image generator with chat attached.
Comparison
Against Candy AI, Selira gives up polish and visual quality and takes back the entire price of admission. Against the free tiers of other apps, there is not really a contest, because most of those are trials wearing a disguise.
